Correspondence of Alger Hiss with Robert Reinders, 1970-1984.

Correspondence includes 18 letters written by Hiss to Reinders, a four-page handwrtten account by Reinders of his friendship with Hiss, and a press release, dated October 18, 1971, concerning Hiss's speaking engagements at the Universities of Keele and Nottingham. Many of the letters concern Hiss's lecture tour of British universities in the fall of 1971, facilitated by Reinders, a lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Nottingham.

Alger Hiss (1904-1996) was born in Baltimore, Maryland and educated at Baltimore City College, Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Law School. During the new Deal period he worked as an attorney at the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, in the Solicitor General's Office at the Justice Department, as Assistant Secretary of State and in other positions in the State Department, and as a member of the U.S. delegation to the Yalta conference in 1945.
